We are proud to announce that Dr. Brian Esselman, Social Studies teacher at Affton High School, has been selected as the 2025 Missouri History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. This prestigious award recognizes one outstanding history educator from each state who demonstrates exceptional commitment to teaching American history with creativity, passion, and dedication to student success.
Dr. Esselman was nominated for the honor by Professor Lisa Lillie of Saint Louis University, who has been a long-standing educational partner through SLUβs 1818 dual credit program. In her recommendation, Professor Lillie highlighted Dr. Esselmanβs innovative and student-centered approach to teaching history and social studies, including his recent work leading the development of Afftonβs MyPath program in Global Piracy.
βIβm humbled by this recognition,β said Dr. Esselman. βBut Iβve always believed that good teaching is a team effort. This award belongs not just to me, but to the incredible educational partners and colleagues I work with every day who put students at the center of everything we do.β
In addition to receiving a $1,000 award and a certificate of recognition, Dr. Esselman will be honored at a state ceremony later this year. He will also be considered for the 2025 National History Teacher of the Year, a distinction awarded to one of the 53 state winners in the fall.
The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the study and love of American history through educational programs and resources. Since 2004, their History Teacher of the Year program has recognized exceptional Kβ12 educators who bring history to life in classrooms across the country.
Affton School District is thrilled to celebrate this well-deserved honor and grateful for Dr. Esselmanβs ongoing contributions to academic excellence. Please join us in congratulating him on this incredible achievement!
